{tips & tricks} TUESDAY :: the importance of professional makeup on your wedding day.

happy tuesday, dear blog readers of mine!

so i stumbled upon an article today that showcases prime examples of how dramatic the transformation can be when women have their makeup professionally done. the following picture shows a woman with no makeup on and then after having her makeup done by a russian makeup artist named vadim Andreev.

{image from the article via slr lounge}

while some of the featured ladies have a ridiculous amount of makeup on that would only be appropriate in the most avant-garde of fashion magazines, the purpose of the article is clear: makeup can work wonders!

why rely on your photographer's photoshop skills when you can ensure you look your best sans any digital altering?

here in savannah, we are lucky to have a number of amazing makeup artists at our clients' disposal!

just a couple of our favorites are beyond beautiful by heather {see her site and portfolio here} and dollface by jules {see her site and portfolio here}, both of whom use airbrush makeup systems as well as false eyelashes {which can look beautifully natural and are completely essential for memorably gorgeous wedding photos, in my opinion!} to make brides look flawless.

suggestions? questions? thoughts?

let me know in the comments!

as always, have a beautiful day ;)

Fashion Friday: Retro Glam

So clearly retro styles are back in serious way. I am beyond obsessed and I pretty much can’t stop talking about it. I love it. LOVE. IT. Okay, I’m calming down now. The hair and makeup are still very relevant for today. I think you can go classic or modern depending on your own style. Here are some of my favorite products to achieve either look!!!

Classic

If you are going classic, than you need to take your cues from Ms. Monroe. Cat eye and red lipstick. BAM! For this look you don’t want a dewy finish to your skin, so try a powder foundation like Bare Minerals Matte Formula Foundation. A strong winged eye is absolutely necessary! Swipe a bit touch of golden-y highlighter shadow, I like rice paper by MAC, all over your lid and up to your arch. You don’t want the color to be too white because you WILL look like a drag queen. Then use a liquid liner pen like Mac’s Penultimate Eye Liner for the ultimate precession to create your wing. For the your lip, try a matte formula like Nars Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Dragon Girl. Finish the look, with a swipe of Pale Pink Blush by Bobbi Brown and a million coats of mascara Diorshow Mascara.

Modern

With the modern take you don’t really have any rules to follow which is awesome because it’s all up to your interpretation. I would opt for dewier skin because I just think it’s a much fresher look. So I would start with Bobbi Brown BB Cream to even out your skin. You could apply a touch of Make Up For Ever’s translucent finishing powder to your T-zone so you aren’t an oil slick in pictures. I still think a winged eye is must, it’s flattering and just major!! I would start the same using the allover golden hue and you could use the same MAC pen, but if you are feeling really crazy maybe a violet or navy Bobbi Brown gel liner to create a softer affect. Use a cream or gel blush like Perfekt Cheek Perfection Gel in a soft pink. For the lips I like the idea of a muted bright like Rouge Coco Shine by Chanel in Misia, a soft tangerine/pink/nude... trust me it’s beautiful. Then finish with a ton of mascara!!!

Finish it off with some very loose and natural pin curls or even and faux bob and you are a smoking hot retro glam princess bride... Sounds awesome, right?? I want to be all of those things.

Real Savannah Wedding: Erin and Justin Part 1-Ceremony

Erin and Justin were married in the spring of this year at the Harper Fowlkes House. (One of our favorite venues!) The rain put a little damper on the ceremony and we had to move it indoors but that didn't matter one bit! Nothing was going to damper the excitement and love that these two shared. Erin has fabulous taste and a keen eye for design. I mean look at that fabulous head piece, shoes and drew?!?!?! She did an amazing job incorporating the most intricate and unique details that told the story of her and Justin and their love for one another. We just adore the pomander ball she had for the flower girl and wreaths for the garden doors. Tune in tomorrow for the portraits--you won't want to miss these!

Thank you Azelle Photography for the timeless images that tell the most fabulous story of their day.

Look for Erin and Justin's wedding in the next issue of Savannah Magazine and Ruffled Blog!

Glam Makeup, Part 2

So, if you read part 1 then you know that I believe in only 2 makeup looks for your wedding day, simple and dramatic!! And if you weren’t a simple girl, then you must be a glamazon!! Now just like simple doesn’t mean bare, glam doesn’t mean drag queen. The glam girls just want to look spectacular and have a little extra spark to there look, we are talking full set of lashes, highlighters, contouring, the whole shebang. I never want a bride to look too far from their everyday appearance, but it’s all about what you are comfortable with!!
Foundation. My favorite big night out foundation is Stila One Step, it covers and perfects while looking natural and feeling as light as air. When I say perfects, I mean it! The finish is absolutely flawless!
Concealer. Okay, so for Glam makeup we go big or go home, so we have to go all out. The best all purpose concealer, hands down, is Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage. With 2 colors to blend together you are able to create the perfect shade!! Now with glam makeup there is no such thing as too much, so I also think a brightening concealer like YSL’s Touche Eclat is a good idea if you have super dark under eye circles. This stuff is generally regarded as the best!!
Bronzer. Boy do I love some bronzer and I think that wearing bronzer on your big day really shows up well in photos. Choose a matte brown-golden toned bronzer 1-2 shades darker than your skin tone. No orange sparkle here, got it??!?! Bobbi BrownToo Faced, and Benefit all make killer awesome bronzers. With a big fluffy brush starting at your forehead make a sweeping motion to the apple of your cheek then continue to your chin, making a big 3. Dab a bit on the bridge of your nose and finish with blending some into your hairline.
Blush. When going for a dramatic look I think a super rosy cheek is always best. Bobbi Brown Blush in Pale Pink is the most perfect blush ever. It works on every single skin tone and instantly brightens up your face. I’m obsessed with this stuff, it’s what I wore on my wedding day!!!
Highlighter. Same highlighter rules as the simple makeup post. Benefit’s High Beam is a must!! You dot it along your cheek bones, bridge of your nose, bow of your lip, and the arch and inner corner of your eye. Blend and Done!!
Lashes. When we are going Glam false eyelashes are a must!!! If you are skilled in the art of applying lashes, then I prefer using individual lashes concentrated on middle to outside corner of your eye. Or if you use a half set, choose one that tapers in at the inside corner and flares out at the outside.
Mascara. Choose any volumizing and lengthening formula. My fave is CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion, I like it more than any department store brand!!
Eyeliner. Once again, same as simple. Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, Nuf said!! This stuff is heaven. It’s all in the name, it glides on easily and then stays put all day!! They colors are heavily pigmented and incredibly rich. I’m a fan of zero, a charcoal black, and bourbon, a deep brown, both for wedding day makeup. If gel liner is more your speed, I’m a big fan of Bobbi Brown Gel Eyeliner!!! I would say that any of the colors would be a lovely choice for your wedding day because they are all so unbelievably rich!
EyeShadow. First, you need a primer and Urban Decay’s Primer Potion is my favorite. It keeps any and all eyeshadow from creasing. Lalalalove. I think Chanel Quadra Eye Shadow in Dunes is such a classic color combination, that when layered on can be so stunning and dramatic.
Lips. We are going big, so lip liner, lip stick, and gloss!!! I say go with the classic Mac Lip Pencil in Spice, followed by a nice nude-y brown like Brown or Brownie from Bobbi Brown, then follow with a fabulous nude gloss like Glamour Gloss in First Time by Too Faced
To set any look, use finishing spray like Urban Decay’s All Nighter which will ensure that your make up stays put all night long!!!

Simple Makeup, Part 1

Keira photo via
Angie photo via
Jen photo via
Over time I’ve learned that with the millions of different personalities out there when it comes to wedding makeup, you fall into one of two categories... simple or dramatic. I’m serious! It’s that simple, there’s variety to each, but I think that what makeup style you choose says a ton about the kind of wedding you are going to have!! Simple wedding makeup doesn’t mean that you are not wearing any makeup, it just means that you look just like you but better. I NEVER advise going sans makeup on your wedding day!! Go ahead, don’t listen to me... you are going to want to cry when you see your professional photos. Even with a decent amount of makeup, you can look washed out in a pro lens if you don’t apply it properly!!! No worries, I have your must have list of wedding day products and the secrets to applying the perfectly.
Foundation. Yes, you need foundation. I don’t care that you never wear it, you probably don’t have professionals taking photos of you everyday either... Awesome cameras take awesome pictures, they capture everything... EVERYTHING. So foundation is a must, for the natural folks I suggest either Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer because it covers brilliantly and still looks like your skin. If you are a fan of powder foundations, I would suggest a non-matte formula like Bare Minerals Original Foundation
Concealer. Now unless you have a serious problem with acne or under-eye circles, it is possible to get away by just using your foundation as your concealer for the simple makeup folks. You can even use a tiny brush to use extra foundation to cover up extra redness or whatnot. Do this after you’ve applied your foundation.
Blush. This is a must and my favorite for a simple and easy wedding look is Stila’s Convertible Cream Color. You pat it on with your fingers on the apple of your cheeks and it leaves a stunning natural flush. My favorite colors are petunia and peony.
HighlighterBenefit’s High Beam is a must!! You dot it along your cheek bones, bridge of your nose, bow of your lip, and the arch and inner corner of your eye. Blend and Done!!
Mascara. You can go with your favorite black mascara, mine is CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion in the purple tube. It’s cheap and it’s fabulous, need I say more!?
EyelinerUrban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil, Nuff said!! This stuff is heaven. It’s all in the name, it glides on easily and then stays put all day!! They colors are heavily pigmented and incredibly rich. I’m a fan of zero, a charcoal black, and bourbon, a deep brown, both are perfect for wedding day makeup
EyeShadow. Keep your eye makeup super simple with one light base color on the whole lid then a dark color to great depth in your crease. I love Bobbi Brown Cream Shadows, sandy gold and stone are perfect colors. They last all day and don’t crease!! Brilliant. Then you don’t have to worry about primers and whatnot.
Lips. Use a creamy lipstick like Bobbi Brown Creamy Lip Color, I think rose and pinky-brown tones are perfect for a natural and simple look. Try it in the colors Italian Rose and Rose Brown.
To set any look, use finishing spray like Urban Decay’s All Nighter which will ensure that your make up stays put all night long!!!
Happy Wedding Day!!!

Celebrity Inspiration: Kim Kardashian - Bronzed Goddess

13.003

Wow. She is hot, not doubt. Now something you should about KK, this girl wears a pound of makeup every single day. For reals. I mean it’s insane how much work goes into her looking like she does, but here is the “normal” way to accomplish her look. First, you need to be tan. And since I loathe the sun you need to get a genius hand applied tan or do it yourself with an at home formula, St. Tropez is one of the best. Then get a great makeup that matches your tan, L’Oreal True Match is a genius drugstore foundation. Look for a bronzing powder without sparkle, shimmer, or any hint of an orange hue. The color should look brown to achieve the most natural look. For your cheeks a nice pink cream blush will blend well into your foundation and give you that dewy look. For your eyes, a palette like Too Faced Natural eye will work well. It has all the colors that you need to create this brownish/gold smokey eye. You will also need a nice brown eye liner. Finish it all off with the perfect nude gloss, Too Faced Glamour Gloss is my absolute new obsession, it’s brilliant!!!!! This is the perfect outdoor wedding makeup. Adore.

List of Suggested Products:

Foundation: L’Oreal True Match

Bronzing Powder: Bobbi Brown

Blush: Stila Convertible color in Petunia

Gloss: Too Faced Glamour Gloss in First Time

Eyeshadow: Too Face Natural Eye Palette

Eyeliner: Urban Decay in Bourbon

Mascara: Covergirl Lash Blast

Self Tanner: St. Tropez

Celebrity Inspiration: Minka Kelly

celebinsp.001 This makeup look is for the all american girl next door. It’s natural with a bit of sass. Your skin is simple and fresh, so I love Bare Minerals foundation. It goes on very light, but it’s got great coverage. Plus, it feels like you aren’t wearing anything. I would do a swipe of bronzer in a 3 from the forehead to the cheek bone to the chin, then a light swipe on the nose, followed by a peachy-pink blush like Orgasm by NARS. For bronzer, I love Hoola by Benefit, but whatever bronzer you use make sure it’s brown and not orange. You know how that will work out. The lips are all natural, so I would line with Macs Spice lip pencil and use Mac lip color in Faux. That perfect nude/pink lip. For the eyes a swipe of Bare Minerals Frost eye color along the lead to the crease then finish with a volumizing mascara, my favorite is Cover Girl Lashblast in the purple tube. This look is perfect for any bride who wants to look dolled up, but like herself. It’s no fuss, but still elegant.

Don’t be afraid to rock celebrity style on your big day!!!

Celebrity Makeup Inspiration: Emma Stone

celebinsp.002 So, when I saw this makeup job I HAD to share it with you and show you how easy it is to get this romantic super fierce makeup. The skin is healthy, but coverage is on the heavier side... no dewy shine here. To get this look I am gonna suggest a ton of Bobbi Brown makeup, she is the queen of healthy skin. I would use her stick foundation, which is light and creamy, but a great matte coverage. For this look we aren’t allowed any tired eyes, so Laura Mercier’s secret camouflage concealer is in order, this stuff is genius!!!! I mean it erases any sign of sleep deprivation. And what bride wants to look tired. For the cheeks a swipe of Bobbi Brown’s classic blush in peony. The eyes are suuuuuper easy. A swipe of Brown’s cream eyeshadow in bone over the entire lid, then with a liner brush give yourself a thin, but prominent cat eye with just a tiny flick at the corner of the lid. Finish with a lengthening mascara, my favorite is CoverGirl Lash Blast in the yellow tube and Revlon’s color burst lipstick in fuschia. It is a super flattering pink on most skin tones. I think this look would be perfect for a night time, black tie event. It’s romantic and simple, but still has some fun and whimsy to it.

Don’t be afraid to rock celebrity style on your big day!!!

Real Savannah Wedding: Beverly and Kenyon Part 1-Ceremony

Beverly and Kenyon were married on April 3rd in Orleans Square in front of their reception site amongst friends and loved ones during the most perfect Savannah weather! But what really was incredible and a first for us, is that Beverly wore her mothers wedding gown-----UNCHANGED----and can you blame her? It is breath-taking! She looked smashing in it as well. These two are just the sweetest and most caring people you will come across and each and every vendor commented just that throughout the night! Kenyon serves our country (a big thank you to him for his service, as it is always an honor sharing in a fellow military soldier’s wedding) and chose to marry the love of his life in his dress blues…and how handsome was he? Guests enjoyed lawn games before and after the wedding ceremony before heading over to the cocktail hour at the Harper Fowlkes House.
